Sis, it’s time to take your hair down! Don’t leave your braids in too long.

Braided extensions can transform your look, offering a protective style that adds elegance and spice. However, to keep your natural hair healthy and vibrant, it’s essential to provide the right care and maintenance for your extensions. In this blog post, we’ll discuss how long you should leave in braided extensions and why it’s crucial to remove them after four to six weeks. I’ll also share the importance of washing and nurturing your hair to maintain its overall health.

As a stylist my clients often ask how long they should leave their braids in.  They are shocked when I tell them 4-6 weeks because most people keep braids in much longer.  Unfortunately, leaving your braids in for an extended period can cause major damage to your natural hair.  I’ve listed the primary reasons below:

  • Leaving extensions for an extended period can stress your natural hair, leading to breakage and thinning.
  • Regular washing becomes challenging with long-term extensions, potentially leading to scalp issues.
  • As your natural hair grows, it can become tangled with the extensions, making removal more difficult.
It's not enough to just remove your extensions in a timely manner but it’s important to take the steps below between installs to maintain healthy hair and promote growth.
  • Cleanse and Moisturize: Regularly washing your hair promotes scalp health and removes buildup. Use sulfate-free shampoos and conditioners to retain natural oils.
  • Deep Conditioning: Provide your natural hair with deep conditioning treatments to restore moisture and keep it healthy.
  • Nighttime Care: Wear a silk or satin scarf or use a silk pillowcase to reduce friction and tangling while you sleep.
Taking proper care of your braided extensions is essential for maintaining the health and vitality of your natural hair. By adhering to the recommended timeframe of four to six weeks, you allow your hair to breathe, enabling you to wash, nurture, and strengthen it. Prioritize good hair hygiene by regular washing and gentle handling to ensure that your hair remains beautiful and healthy, both with and without extensions.

Remember, consulting with a professional hairstylist can provide personalized advice tailored to your hair type, ensuring your hair receives the best care possible.
